The Beatles Help! (Original 1965 Promotional Video)
This is a music Video from the 60s of the Beatles song Help. This is to start off with is different to the 50s song for example the quality of the camera has improved since the technology has improved in 10 years. Also what also has happened is that In the 60s they started to do videos with the miming into the camera as if they were performing the songs live instead of the whole dancing scene that was there in the elvis video of course some aspects were there in that era aswell but now the mail thing that artists did was performing into the video.
At the start of the video You see the Beatles in a long shot sitting down on a bench at one angle Then at the second time the word Help is said The camera angle changes to a close up at the front of the bench then after the word is said again the angle changes to a long shot at the other side of the bench which is timed well to the song. This at the time was probably a big effective idea whereas in the modern days anyone could do that on windows movie maker.
As the song goes on you see different medium shots and a different long shot plus two more close ups that follow the band up and down the bench. also you find cuts of the close up at the start of the video
throughout the music video
These ideas in this video are basic compared to the videos you would find today for example for this video by Jessie J this also has kind of the same setting (in a studio) and it has a range of shots but the difference is that It has many more cuts and effects on the video and the way its done makes the video look more active.
But you can see how the basic techniques from the Beatles video have pretty much grown into what has become in the Jessie J video.
[HD] Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (official music video) + LYRICS (BEST QUA...
This music video is for the song Bohemian Rhapsody by the band Queen
This Music video has evolved quite a bit since the Beatles music video in many ways for instance its now in colour Also in the Queen video they have more effects for example at one point they have footage over lapping other footage and also they use more transitions such as fading in and out. Also they zooming effects in the music video so you see how its grown from the 60s to the 70s.
Michael Jackson - Black Or White
This is the music video for the Michael Jackson song black or white which is from the 90s
This I have found that it has evolved from the 80s era by becoming more sensible and a little bit realistic
but only by a little bit if you look at the 80s era videos they get a bit silly with everything like how in the A-Ha video the girl goes into a comic book where as in this music video the dad gets blown to africa which still is a bit silly but then on after its pretty much in the real world just dancing about which could be a small similarity to the 50s when Elvis danced also.
Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock (Music Video)
This Video is a video from the 50s by Elvis Presley This is a music video for his song Jailhouse rock
and basically what happens in this music video is that hes just dancing in a prison with other cell mates.
In this Video its Pretty Obvious that this very different to the type of Music videos we get today For starters whole set looks pretty cheap and unrealistic and even the pole at the start wobbles about but thats what most sets were like in the past from low budget. If you look at the Video By the Arctic Monkeys in Comparison which is mainly based in a prison you can see in the screenshots that their is a huge difference in this. For example In the 50s video everything is more jolly and happy looking where as in the 2012 video it looks pretty gloomy and an unpleasant place to be in. Another thing that I realized about both of these videos is that the modern video from 2012 was more realistic then this video from the 50s as in with the elvis song everyone is dancing about and having a blast but in the Arctic Monkeys Video Its more serious like as in there is a man all on his own in a cell. Another major difference is that back in the times of the 50s they always did the whole massive dancing things in video where as that tradition pretty much died out as the years go on. Another way these eras are different is that the camera angles differ from each other such as the elvis ones just change from different shots like long shots and medium shots also its slowly tracks elvis at some points.
Then in the Arctic monkeys videos its got more advanced techniques still got long shots and mid shots and tracking but it also has lense flare bluring background and imdependant shots of like faces, hands, eyes, cars, windows and more. also it has a other special effects added to it Like coloring effects to suit the mood of the footage plus there is more of a story in the 2012 one so that you see the main character escapes from prison.
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
This song is a song from the 80s Called Sledgehammer
Now this is a famous music video since it has won many awards such as MTV awards and the best British video at the 1987 Brit awards
The video was directed by Stephen R Johnson who Directed many Other Music Videos
Also Adam Whittaker produced the music video who also works with Aardman Animations with the Wallace and Gromit (animations which is a combination of working with clay and stopmotion animation )
As you watch the video you can clearly see why the got Adam Whittaker involved with all the stop motion animation and the clay work.
This was in the 80s and in this era music videos were pretty different compared to the other eras
As technology advanced the same thing happened to the other music videos and more advanced animations appeared in music videos this happenes in this music video. Another good example for this would be the music video for the song by Aha-Take on me
Which also used animation techniques.
As you can see When you look at it in the past eras like the 50s and 60s this is nothing like them at all the music video has completely evolved from being something pretty basic that takes not much time to make whereas the take on me took 16 weeks to make.
